Arsenal v Manchester United Betting Tips: Match Preview
Until Saturday, Arsenal had not scored more than two goals in a Premier League game this season. And considering the outcome of the game, it now makes sense. For the first time this season, Alexis Sánchez displayed a standout performance. After a sluggish few weeks following his busy summer of international football, the Chilean scored a hat-trick to inspire Arsenal to a 5-2 win over Leicester City.
Last season, Arsenal often appeared to be at their best when Sánchez’s lightning pace and movement helped them to carve open opportunities. Fans will be delighted that the Gunners have finally showed signs of life in attack. And what also helped them on Saturday is that Theo Walcott provided add speed to stretch the opposition defence.
Arsenal’s greatest potential has traditionally been found among their attackers. However, the defensive partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel had looked strong until the latter receive a three-match suspension for his red card in the 2-0 defeat against Chelsea. Being deprived of the promising Brazilian made Arsenal vulnerable enough to concede twice against the Foxes.
The ability to retain possession and create chances combined with Arsenal’s speedy attackers will allow for the Gunners to test Daley Blind’s lack of pace at centre-back. Of course, they will have their own defensive issues to contend with.
From a foundational standpoint, Man Utd can be solid defence and have a number of talented midfielders capable of dominating games. A concern, though, is that they do not have the striking quality to consistently win league games between now and the end of the season.
Louis van Gaal chose to sell Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez in the summer, believing that Wayne Rooney could lead the line. Until scoring against Sunderland in a 3-0 win last Saturday, Rooney had not done so in the league since spring. Just because he has broken his cold streak, there is no guarantee that he will play well against Arsenal.
Any poor performances that Rooney delivers will potentially haunt Man Utd this season. Anthony Martial has been excellent so far, but the 19-year-old has yet to play through a frigid and physically demanding Premier League winter.
Martial delivered match-winning performances and has even helped to make his teammates better by creating space for them thanks to his blistering pace. Without the speedy composure of Martial, Man Utd had struggled to score goals this season. Louis van Gaal should start him against the sluggish Per Mertesacker and utilise Martial’s pace again.
Part of the reason why Man Utd have maintained a good defensive record is because they retain a lot of possession, which obviously limits the playing time of their opponents. Arsenal, however, are better than most of their opponents at passing and attacking quickly on the counter.
Walcott and Sánchez can combine to manufacture a narrow Arsenal victory.
