Chelsea v Arsenal Betting Tips: Match Preview
Just when you think Chelsea have fallen as far as humanly possible in their slump, they go and lose 3-1 to Everton. José Mourinho’s men made the trip north to Liverpool, desperate to turn around their fortunes with a victory to salvage the beginning of their season, but they simply did not stand a chance.
Against Everton, Mourinho should be concerned by how Cesc Fàbregas was so soundly dominated by attacking midfielder Ross Barkley. The same can also be said for Diego Costa, who was thwarted all afternoon by centre-back John Stones. Chelsea were 2-0 down after only 22 minutes and the failures of Fàbregas and Costa prevented them from succeeding with a comeback.
Chelsea’s attacking struggles are not that surprising. Even the best teams can go through a barren spell of goals, especially when they are as averse to attacking as Mourinho’s can be. But what has been shocking is how terrible the defence is playing. John Terry missed a game with a suspension, but even he could not make a difference versus Everton. Oh, and Branislav Ivanović has been just awful.
For the most part, Arsenal’s first XI is currently quite clear. However, Arsène Wenger is clearly uncertain as to his best striking option. Arsenal were fans were desperate for Karim Benzema – or any upgrade on Olivier Giroud, for that matter – but Wenger was happy to make do with Giroud and Theo Walcott.
The prospect of Giroud or Walcott is one that represents the choice between power and speed. In Arsenal’s 2-0 home victory over Stoke City, it was Walcott who got the start. Walcott scored after 31 minutes before being withdrawn for Giroud, who then scored on 85 minutes.
Comparatively, Giroud is much better at holding up the ball with his strength and linking up with his teammates. This approach is what will likely favour Arsenal best in playing Chelsea. Walcott could have scored a hat-trick against Stoke, but was not clinical enough. The introduction of his lightning pace later in the game could cause problems for Chelsea’s sluggish defence once they have grown tired.
Nemanja Matić and Fàbregas have not been linking up well in the centre of the park for Chelsea, whereas Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla have both been excellent for Arsenal. This battle will be crucial in determining who wins this London derby.
The fact that Arsenal have already beaten in the Charity Shield does give them a base to build from.
