Manchester City v Newcastle Betting Tips: Match Preview
Manuel Pellegrini stormed out of his post-match conference following the 4-1 defeat at Tottenham, complaining how attendees were asking him stupid questions. Obviously, the Chilean’s annoyance can be attributed to be so easily beaten by Spurs.
After losing 2-1 to West Ham in their last league outing, Man City were supposed to be back on track after demolishing Sunderland 4-1 in the League Cup. And all appeared to be going well, given how Kevin De Bruyne had given Man City the lead at White Hart Lane after 25 minutes.
So, where did it all go wrong for Man City? Statistically, they played as expected in controlling 54% possession and generating eight shots on goal from 22 total attempts. However, a combination of City’s inability to score and their many defensive mistakes resulted in a forgettable day in North London.
For Man City, it is fortuitous that they get to welcome 18th-place Newcastle to Manchester at a time when they are suddenly inconsistent and dropping points. Among Pellegrini’s challenges will be to find a way to get Sergio Agüero scoring again, while defensively the Citizens need to cut out the errors and keep a clean sheet.
There is a real need to be harsh on Newcastle, given that the Magpies splashed out £49.5 million on summer transfer fees. You cannot spend that amount of money and not be expected to start delivering a return on investment from the outset.
For all of their attacking talents, however, Newcastle are not able to consistently score. Before the Chelsea game, they had only managed to score three in six games. They were fortunate to play a Chelsea team that is quickly running out of ideas in defence. In this sense, Newcastle will hope that Man City Vincent Kompany misses out because of illness.
Draws against Man Utd and Chelsea look excellent on Steve McClaren’s managerial record at Newcastle, but the remaining results are just awful. Newcastle have played without personality for the entire season, so it defies convention that they were able to lead Chelsea 2-0 until 79 minutes, when a wonder goal by Ramires from range have the Blues a lifeline.
Against Chelsea, Newcastle managed only to hold on to 35% of possession in the game. Having switched from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2, the Magpies were unable to keep the ball in midfield. Nevertheless, the terrible play of Chelsea’s defence allowed for Newcastle to steal a couple of goals that they would not have scored otherwise.
Man City face a tough trip to play Borussia Monchengladbach in midweek, so they will welcome the opportunity to unleash the full force of their attacking talents on Newcastle.
The Magpies can only register so many draws against the big four. The betting options are quite limited for this game, so focus on over 2.5 goals and more goals in the second half.
