Manchester United v Newcastle Betting Tips: Match Preview
Man Utd supporters already have reason for optimism, given that manager Louis van Gaal has inspired his team to win three from their first three competitive games of the season. An edgy home outing against Tottenham resulted in a tense 1-0 draw, while the 1-0 win over Aston Villa was also quite tense.
But Man Utd appeared to have come good with a 3-1 win over Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying tie. Louis van Gaal elected to stay with the same first XI that he played against Villa, helping to give the team consistency. And although they started 1-0 down following a Michael Carrick own goal, strikes from Memphis Depay (x2) and Marouane Fellaini (x1) gave the reds a clear lead for the second leg.
Critics have largely set aside Man Utd’s defensive solidarity to criticise their inability to score heavily against Tottenham and Aston Villa. However, Depay’s breakout performance Club Brugge proves that Man Utd can score goals. Depay could prove instrumental in inspiring Wayne Rooney back to his best form.
Carrick and new signing Morgan Schneiderlin are both looking solid in midfield, while the legendary Bastian Schweinsteiger is looking comfortable when coming off the bench. Meanwhile, Juan Mata is picking out some incredible through balls. But all will count for naught if the reds cannot finish.
From now until the end of the season, it will be mentioned on countless occasions how Steve McClaren was the “Wally with the brolly,” during his time as England manager. The former Man Utd assistant manager was once the right hand of Sir Alex Ferguson, but has struggled to find his own consistency in attempting to forge a managerial career. Newcastle United are the latest stop on McClaren’s journey.
Newcastle fans will be firmly aware that McClaren comes to them after failing to secure promotion to the Premier League for Derby County, after which the Rams sacked him. Mike Ashley essentially rewarded McClaren despite his failure, but the fans might not forget this.
In the Magpies’ first game, they were drew 2-2 at home after Southampton pegged them back on 79 minutes through Graziano Pellè. There was a relative sense of optimism following that result, as Southampton had been so good last season.
But any confidence and optimism has been eroded after losing 2-0 in an away game against Swansea City, with Daryl Janmaat receiving a straight red card. Newcastle gave up an astonishing 66% share of possession, while allowing 19 total shots and six on target. An away game against Man Utd is likely to be tougher.
Newcastle have decent players here and there, but they lack quality from their remaining players and manager to resist a Man Utd team that are eyeing their fourth-straight victory to start the season.
They could struggle to even score against Man Utd’s solid defence.
