USA v Mexico Preview 2011-06-26
USA meets Mexico yet again, for a third consecutive final in the Concacaf Gold Cup. Each team won one, from the previous two, USA in 2007 with 2:1 and Mexico in 2009 with 5:0. So far Mexico has 8 titles, while the US has half of that, and sits on 4.
The game will be played on June 25th at 9:00 PM EST, but in UK time, the game happens to be on June 26th at 2:00 AM BST
Let’s overview what happened until this final stage with Team USA in the tournament. The team started well with a victory over Canada with 2:0, but lost their second game to Panama with 1:2. Followed a victory over Guadalupe with 1:0 and an overall second place in the group. Quarter-Final against Jamaica, which finished 2:0 in regular time in favor of the US and advancement in the Semi-Final stage. This time a victory over Panama, with the minimal 1:0, enough to place them on the final. While team USA is a finalist, their performance hasn’t been satisfying, with minimal victories over mediocre opponents.
Mexico did a lot better in the group stage, winning all three games, scoring at least 4 goals per game and a total of 14 goals in 3 games. Victories over El Salvador & Cuba with 5:0, and a victory over Costa Rica with 4:1. The team finished first in the group, scoring 14 goals and conceding just 1. In the Quarter-Finals, Mexico was behind with a goal after receiving one in the 5th minute against Guatemala. However with goals from de Nigris and J. Hernández, the qualified for the Semi-Finals. There, Mexico met Honduras and after a 0:0 in the regular 90 minutes, they scored 2 goals in extra, goals again by de Nigris and J. Hernández. Mexico’s overall goal ratio is 18:2 which is impressive.
I am not aware why the sportsbooks have shown that the game will be played on a neutral venue, when the game is played in California, USA, what’s so neutral about that? Anyways, in this format, USA v Mexico, both teams have played 8 times in the past 8 years, where USA leads with 5 victories, 2 draws and one single loss. However that loss was the most recent meeting of both teams in 2009’s final where Mexico won with 5:0.
The value bet here would be a draw @ 3.10 (BetOnline), as both teams seem to be equally good, and the stakes are high.
However, my prediction would be a victory for Mexico in regular time. Hernández is in a wonderful shape, so be sure to put him down as one of the goal scorers as well. Odds vary but on the average are around 2.87 (Bet365).
