Newcastle
A long-suffering summer without significant transfer investment made the Newcastle Utd fan-base concerned. Even Rafa Benítez was unable to hold back from telling interviewers that he wanted more activity from the club.
Fans were then alarmed by consecutive losses to Tottenham Hotspur (2-0) and Huddersfield (1-0). A 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the cup seemed to spell doom for the Magpies, but they managed to rise again with league wins over West Ham (3-0), Swansea City, and Stoke City (2-1).
Obviously, the recent 1-0 loss away to Brighton was disappointing, but Newcastle are now on nine points and sit ninth in the Premier League table. They will have down patches, but Newcastle seem to have the defensive quality to try and survive for next season.
On Sunday, though, Newcastle will have to lower their target by settling for a clean-sheet against Liverpool. Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark have been solid in central-defence, but a revolving cast at fullback could be an issue against the Liverpool attack.
Speaking of attack, Newcastle have struggled to get goals from their strikers. Thus far, there have only been two league goals from the front-men, while Christian Atsu is the only midfielder to score.

Liverpool
September has been another wildly inconsistent month of results for Liverpool. The Reds claimed seven points from a possible nine in August, but following the international break they have struggled.
And it all seemed to start with Sadio Mané being sent off against Man City. In response, Jürgen Klopp refused to back down and defend, which contributed to Liverpool being smashed 5-0.
A 1-1 draw at home to Burnley saw them stumble again in the league before holding to defeat Leicester City 3-2 at the King Power Stadium. The bright point was the goal-scoring return of Philippe Coutinho.
Klopp then attempted to use Coutinho in central midfield against Spartak Moscow in the Champions League. The idea was to improve the supply to Mané, Roberto Firmino, and Mohammed Salah, but the actuality was a 1-1 draw in Russia.
Liverpool had the chances to defeat Spartak, but they were wasteful in front of goal after travelling thousands of miles to play. Newcastle will try to frustrate Liverpool, but the Reds should be able to craft enough chances to win. They have to be clinical and take them.
Verdict
Newcastle have remained loyal to a 4-2-3-1 system, but on Sunday they face arguably the strongest 4-3-3 team in the league. The challenge this presents is that Newcastle’s centre-backs could be drawn out of position. After all, Firmino drops deep while Mané and Salah constantly cut inside from wide positions.
Because Liverpool are playing Newcastle, they offer decent value to secure an away win against beatable opposition and their former manager, Rafa Benítez. Newcastle can be defensively solid, but Liverpool are on another level and their own defence is unlikely to struggle against unproductive strikers.
