Premier League Worst Transfers for Season 2010-2011
Posted by: Mitko Atanasov in May, 2011
A lot of bad transfers were made this year, perhaps because football club owners start having too much money, and know nothing of football. We can’t review them all, but here are the top five we have chosen and have decided are worth your time reading.
While such rankings can never be objective, as everyone has their own opinion and judgement criteria, here is what we have chosen for Premier League worst transfers for 2010-2011.
1. Fernando Torres
Transfer Fee: £50 million. Fernando Torres sure had great seasons in Liverpool, but did he really deserve to be the most expensive transfer in Premier League? After all he wasn’t anywhere in his best shape having scored 9 goals for Liverpool from August 2010 to December. After his transfer, Torres was able to score only a single goal in 12 games, and this is why he takes #1 spot in this rank list.
2. Mario Balotelli
Transfer Fee: £23 million. The Italian joined Manchester City from the team of Inter in August 2010. Since then he has made 17 appearances, scored 6 goals, picked up 6 yellow cards and 1 red. While a goal almost every third match is not that bad, a lot is expected from him, considering his transfer fee. That’s perhaps the lesser problem considering his temper that has brought him a red card in Premier league and a red card in Europa League as well.
3. Edin Dzeko
Transfer Fee: £27 million Edin Dzeko, was in a great shape in Wolfsburg before he came to Manchester City. In fact he made history in Wolfsburg becoming the top league scorer in the club’s history with 59 goals in 96 appearances. When he left Wolfsburg the strike had 111 appearances and 66 goals. Since he came on City of Manchester however, in 12 appearances he has only a goal that came recently in a game against Blackburn. While this second half of the season has been disappointing for Dzeko, hopes remain he will be able to show next season what he did in Wolfsburg.
4. Bebe
Transfer Fee: £7 million. Tiago Manuel Dias Correia also know as Bebe, came from Vitoria de Guimaraes to Manchester United. In May 2010 he was offered to PSV, but they turned down the offer because they did not know him. He signed with the Portuguese club, but never played an official match for them. He has no goals in Premier League, but has scored a goal in Champions League against Bursaspor and a goal in Carling Cup. For a player without no real history, the transfer fee is just ridiculous. Perhaps Ferguson saw something for the future, that we can’t see yet?
5. Sebastien Squillaci
Transfer Fee: £5.73 million Wenger has always needed a solid defender to help his team reach the title. Well he didn’t find it in the face of the French defender. On top of that Wenger is usually the type of manager that relies on youngsters, however Squillaci is no where near young at the age of 30. Has made 21 appearances this season, sitting mostly on the bench lately.
All of the above players might eventually adapt to the English football and record hell of a season next year, but for this one, they remain one of the worst transfers in Premier League.
