1. Chelsea
Chelsea has always been famous for their good defense. The team has always been depending on players with great physique, which affected their creativity in a bad way perhaps, but sure helped out when it comes to conceding goals. So far into the season Chelsea has allowed an average of 0.8000 goals per match, a total of 28 conceded goals in 35 matches and it’s the best defensive team so far. Here are some of the best moments of Peter Cech this season:
2. Manchester City
The second spot goes to Manchester City, who have had one of their best seasons in Premier League ever. The team has conceded an average of 0.9118 goals per match and takes the second spot in the best defensive team ranking. Since the injury of Shay Given, Joe Hart took over the goal and has had a great season with some great saves. Check them out below:
3. Manchester United
This is the one ranking list, where Manchester United follows after their neighbor Manchester City. The team has conceded on an average of 0.9429 goals per match placing them on the third place in this list. Manchester United has conceded a total of 33 goals in 35 games. Despite Van der Sar’s age (40), he proved to be the all time irreplaceable keeper of Manchester United. Below is footage of some of his greatest saves:
4. Arsenal
Despite the problems Arsenal has been having with its goalkeepers, the team managed to get the 4th spot in this list. The Gunners have conceded an average of 1.0286 goals per match for a total of 36 goals in 35 matches. Since Wojciech Szczesny took Almunia’s place things have improved. Many say he is the future for Arsenal. Here’s footage of some of his greatest saves this season:
5. Fulham
Perhaps the surprise in this list, but Fulham is the 5th of the 5 best defensive teams in Premier League this season. The team has conceded an average of 1.0283 goals per match and with 3 rounds remaining has a chance to even get to the 4th spot. Fulham has conceded a total of 36 goals this year, as much as Arsenal, but has 15 draw games overall. Mark Schwarzer has had a great season, sadly no video compilations are available, but there’s a good video of him playing dead on which you can laugh:
As there are 3 rounds left in season 2010/2011 slight changes are possible, but unlikely as the top 5 has been the same since March 2011.
Updated May 22nd 2011 – season is over: After the end of the season the spots remain exactly the same, although the numbers might differ a little bit.
