US Open Tennis 2016 – Betting Preview
The 2016 US Open tennis tournament starts on Monday 29 August, with reigning champion Novak Djokovic aiming to retain his men’s singles title. However, he will likely have to contend with the in-form Andy Murray at some stage in the tournament, with the Scot enjoying a successful 2016 so far.
Meanwhile, Serena Williams is the player to beat in the women’s singles, with last year’s champion, Flavia Pennetta, having retired from the sport. Both tournaments are guaranteed to be a spectacle, so get a breakdown of all the key details in this 2016 US Open betting preview, with odds delivered by bet365.
Men’s Singles – Top Contenders
Novak Djokovic (1.90): The reigning US Open men’s singles champion started 2016 brightly by winning his sixth Australian Open title. But Djokovic was humbled at Wimbledon when he lost in the third round to Sam Querrey, leaving Andy Murray with a clear run at the English major. Despite that set back, Djokovic is still viewed as a 1.90 favourite with bet365 to win the US Open.
Andy Murray (3.00): Djokovic is Murray’s nemesis, with the Scot losing 24-10 in the overall record between the pair. For Murray, it was not quite as daunting when forced to face an ageing Roger Federer in the 2016 Wimbledon final, and he claimed an elusive third major crown by beating Milos Raonic in straight sets. And despite a second triumph at the Olympics, Murray is still behind Djokovic with 3.00 odds.
Women’s Singles – Top Contenders
Serena Williams (2.25): The tennis world was shocked when Serena Williams lost to the un-seeded Roberta Vinci, having won three-straight titles. Altogether, Williams has won the tournament on six occasions, and another win would leave her one short of tying the all-time record.
In 2016, Williams got off to a frustrating start by losing the Australian Open to Angelique Kerber, but returned to form by winning Wimbledon for a seventh time. Given her triumph at Wimbledon, bet365 has made her the clear favourite at 2.25.
Simona Halep (9.00): Ranked in the world’s top three, Simona Halep is still competing to win her first major tournament. So far, the closest she came was in reaching the 2014 French Open final. At 24 years old, she has time on her side, but it will be tough for her to overcome Williams, with bet365 pricing her at 9.00.
Garbiñe Muguruza (9.00): Muguruza might actually be a better prospect than Halep, considering that she already has a major crown after winning the 2016 French Open. But the 22-year-old Swiss player has only made it to the second round before, so she needs to improve at Flushing Meadows.
Angelique Kerber (10.00): At odds of 10.00, Kerber could be a good prospect after winning the Australian Open in January. Kerber upset Williams in that match, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, so she will not be short on self-belief.
